Thank you Lionsgate and Philadelphia Asian & Queer (PAQ) for an advanced screening of “Joy Ride”!
[SPOILER ALERT] “Joy Ride” is not only a lip gloss smacking, belly laughing, snorting thrill ride, but also a tissue tear jerker.
Think “Flossy Posée” in “Girls Trip” plus “Kung Fu Panda 3” (Jack Black as a panda asking who he is, questioning about being the son of a duck, and traveling to a secret panda village) ~ with actual Asian American female humans as the main characters, not as a token minority BIPOC supporting friend #5 repeating a non quotable one liner and a characteristic Hello Kitty head bob.
Follow hetero high achiever Asian adoptee Audrey Sullivan (yes, that’s the last name of one of my cousins); bisexual YOLO Lolo, glamorpuss born again queer Kat, and socially truthful nonbinary Dead Eye on their BFF business meets BFS journey across Asia.
Each character has relatable thoughts, emotions, actions ~ and character development written, produced and directed, oh, my, by 3 Asian American women (and Seth Rogen’s crew)!!!
Hold my popcorn Thirty years after “Joy Luck Club,” it’s sooo refreshing to watch “Joy Ride”! Go see “Joy Ride” in theaters on 7/7!!!
